The play we were doing was “West Side Story” and in one scene the characters find and use a broken umbrella they find in a garbage can. Well, I had such a time trying to find a plain black umbrella! All the ones I looked at were too… fancy. So I bought the plainest one I could find, took it to rehearsal, and then made it into a broken work of art. I cut holes in it. I ripped it. I tore out the ribs and bent them. I beat the umbrella against the floor. When I took it to the Assistant Director for approval, he decided it needed to be even more bent – so he bent it over his knee! But there was something missing… the umbrella looked too clean. So I took it outside, threw it in a mud puddle, and jumped up and down on it and stomped it into the mud. After the dirty water dried, I took this muddy, sad umbrella back to the Assistant Director, who gave his approval. This is just one of the many strange things I’ve done in the theatre. It happened over thirty years ago, but I’ve never forgotten it. It will always be among my favorite memories.
